This is worth knowing if you are buying from or into Finland. Finns mark 14 February as ystävänpäivä — Friendship Day — not as Valentine’s Day. Cards and small gifts go to friends, colleagues, relatives and children’s classmates. Romance is not the point, and for most people it isn’t part of the day at all.
The tradition is younger than most people assume. The idea came from the Tampere Heart Association in 1979, a national campaign by the postal service and the Finnish Red Cross made it widely known in 1987, and the day was added to Finnish almanacs in 1996. It caught on quickly: ystävänpäivä is now the second biggest card-sending day of the Finnish year after Christmas. Estonia marks the same date as sõbrapäev, friend’s day.
The practical consequence is about tone. A gift for a friend has to survive daylight — it should be something you can hand over at a coffee shop without any awkwardness. A name or a shared joke works; a grand declaration does not.

What to engrave for a friend
